These native crows got so close to extinction, that for a couple of decades, the only known survivors (fewer than 30) were those in a very carefully managed captive breeding program (https://dlnr.hawaii.gov/alalaproject/).
The Panaewa Rainforest Zoo and Garden (www.hilozoo.org) currently hosts the only two
'alala (retired breeders) on public display anywhere. Spend and hour quietly observing these birds from behind the privacy screens and you will agree with me that they are Just. Cool. Birds.
